Very nice, very LARGE, electric skillet (2009-11-10)
I purchased this electric skillet to use in our motor home. I give it high marks on design, function and quality of materials, but it is much larger than I anticipated, so it may not do much traveling. It's big enough to fry a whole chicken with room to spare, so it's more appropriate for a large family than for empty-nesters on the move. The surface heats up quickly and evenly, is truly nonstick and washes up nicely. The low sides and oval shape make it a nice keep-warm server for foods like meatballs. I found the same "cons" as many of the other reviewers: the legs get loose with normal use and it would be nice to have a steam vent in the lid. Overall, it's a very nice skillet.

I recently purchased a second because I was so happy with my first electric skillet that I wanted a back-up in case I couldn't find another one some day. The finish on this skillet makes it so easy to clean and nothing ever sticks. Great product!!

Saving the griddle (2009-09-25)
I was so happy to find new handles for my griddle. The griddle is very seasoned and I was sad to find the handles had cracked. I was afraid I had to get a new griddle. These handles are a bit larger than the originals so the griddle no longer fits in the orignal box. :( That makes storage at bit more ackward.

Best fry pan handles I own (2008-10-15)
These handles put the skillet about a half inch closer to the counter but replace the originals (which my blonde wife broke) quite nicely. Saved a perfectly good pan from the trash.

Exc4ellent fryer/stove top oven (2010-04-19)
I'm very satisfied with this electric skillet, with my only complaints being that you have to order the rack separately from Presto (necessary if you plan to do any baking or roasting) and that the front legs tend to loosen. It only takes a few twists of a Phillips screwdriver to tighten them again, though, and the benefits far outweigh these minor drawbacks. I maintain the cooking surface coating with gentle washing and application of a little vegetable oil in between uses, same as for a seasoned cast iron griddle, and so far it has held up well--and even, like the iron griddle, has become easier to clean over time. Just be gentle and follow the manufacturer's instructions for warm, soapy water and one of those soft pads. It really pays off.

I was a little worried about steaming and braising in it, because of the long exposure to hot water, but that did fine, too.

If you plan to bake with this, be aware that the tops of things won't brown, and also that it's not as big as an oven and so steam builds up, which is an important consideration if you're doing bakery products. I leave the cover open a crack and use a topping of some sort for things like muffins. By the way, a standard 12-cup muffin tray fits perfectly in here, although you will need to pry up one edge in order to get a good enough grip to remove it.

i bought this as a gift for my dad at Christmas. He has used it every week for at least two to three meals a week. He says it cooks evenly, the non-stick coating eliminates the need for butter or oil, and clean up is so easy! When it's time to replace mine - I'll definitely purchase from Presto's line.

WOK this way! (2010-05-04)
I've been cooking on a wok since I was a teenager; my dad, ever ahead of the curve, had brought a genuine restaurant wok back from a trip to San Francisco. He loved Chinese food and we'd usually take an hour drive to Philadelphia's Chinatown where there were dozens of great restaurants. He wanted to make fried rice and other stir-fries at home, but woks were not the standard kitchen equipment they are now. Our wok was about 30 inches across...a full restaurant sized wok and the only kind he could get. It hung in the garage between meals because it was too big for the kitchen.

Of course, now everyone or nearly everyone uses a wok, and you can easily find genuine carbon steel woks traditionally used in China. But you can also find cast iron (rather like Indian karhis, their version of over-the-fire cooking vessels), enamel-on-cast-iron, stainless, and non-stick, and ...electric. Each of these woks has pros and cons, because woks need high heat, and are designed to sit OVER the fire not on it. So if you have an electric stove or even a standard gas stove, you are going to make compromises when using a traditional wok. Either you have to use a flat bottom to sit on the stove, or you have to make sure your stove's gas is caloric enough to produce the very high heat needed to sear the food and cook it quickly if it is perched on a wok ring.

Normally, I use a carbon steel wok but my current stove has square burners so a wok ring is out, and I don't think the gas is hot enough. I don't like flat bottomed woks. I think they defeat the purpose of the rounded shape. Nor do I want non-stick surface. To me, cast iron is good, but possibly heavy to handle. So I decided I wanted an electric wok, because the element will get the wok super-hot and the stainless steel is a good conductor of heat and the surface is smooth and relatively non-stick by nature.

What you get:

The Presto wok comes with the wok, a plug-in element with a temperature dial, a glass lid, and a wood paddle for stirring the food. This set does not come with a tempura draining rack, that little wire half-circle that fits over the rim and lets the tempura stay hot while it drains of fat. I happened to have one in the kitchen junk box and lo, it fit perfectly, so you probably can dig one up somewhere.

It also has a small instruction manual.

How to use it:

First, wash the wok carefully in VERY hot soapy water. There is a plastic coating that is invisible but is definitely there. It must be scrubbed off with a nylon sponge. You do not need to season the wok but you do need to season the wood paddle with mineral oil, lest it crack.

You plug the element into the socket on the wok, plug it into the wall and turn the dial up to your desired temp (up to 400 degrees F.) Add oil and when the oil reaches your temp (just slightly smoking) you are ready to stir-fry.

The Test Drive and a recipe:

I happened to make an Italian chicken dish as the first test (excusing this non-Chinese test drive by asserting belligerently and untruthfully that Marco Polo brought this very dish back from his travels.) I heated olive oil, added chicken tenders that were washed and patted dry. After they were seared and half-way cooked, I turned down the heat, added artichoke hearts, crushed garlic, shallots, and let the chicken cook to almost done, tossing frequently. Then I added a cup of broth, juice of half a lemon, pepper, and grated Romano cheese. I thickened it a bit with cornstarch slurry and it was done. You can add capers, and I do like them, but since others in our family don't, I left them out. This dish is served on pasta or rice with a garnish of a handful of freshly chopped parsley and more cheese passed around.

Conclusion:

Yeah, yeah, I'll fry up some rice and shrimp and broccoli later to give it a true test but this chicken was well-received by all. And so is the wok. I loved being able to cook on my kitchen island rather than the stove, and maybe we will do some at-table cooking like Sukiyaki later. This is a versatile kitchen appliance and I'm happy with the choice.

This skillet is absolutely amazing.
I have an ancient stove who's pilot lights constantly go out, due to this draft that rips through my home, and so i had the option of buying a new stove or being a cheap a$$ and just making due with some electric product. I opted for the latter.

I saw that this skillet had a high rating so i bought it on a whim. When i got it, i was shocked at the size of this beast...its humongous! so i washed it, started her up and saw what i could do with it. surprisingly it's exactly what i was looking for. It cooks meats just perfectly and makes perfect breakfast foods like pancakes and french toast every morning. so far i've used it to make asian foods like moo shu chicken and stir fry, mexican foods like chicken fajitas etc etc and i have no complaints other than that its freaking huge, but that's my fault for not checking my tape measure to know how big it is.

I will definitely recommend this product to family and friends.

I am very happy I purchased this skillet. It works as expected and it gets hot fast. The temps. seem to be very accurate. It's big enough to cook for an entire family, although I only cook for myself. Go for it if you want to buy it.

We have had a number of electric skillets over the years, but this is our favorite.

Unlike some that we have had, the heating element on this one seems to be better distributed. Others just seem to burn things that are directly above a singular round heating element. Not so with this one.

We also love the size. It is larger than others that we have had. That means more veggies fit around the pot roast. Since the roasted veggies are our favorite part, that means a lot to us.

We have only had this one for a few months, so the jury is still out on how long the non-stick surface will last.

Too fancy (2009-01-09)
I purchased this book to go with the Presto Electric Skillet that I purchased at the same time. The book has some good recipies and definitely shows some of the fancier things that you can prepare with an electric skillet. The problem that I have is that I purchased the skillet and cookbook for my 11-year-old because she wanted to expand her cooking abilities beyond microwave meals and toast. Unfortunately, there are not many recipies in the book that appeal to an 11-year-old. I think it would be better if it included some more very basic meat and potatoes recipies that are more her speed.

The book does have some nice pictures but only has pictures for about a third of the recipies in the book.

Good Overall Product (2009-10-04)
Good overall product, I wanted a stainless steel skillet, because I am tired of wasting money buying "non-stick" skillets and having to throw them away every couple of years or so when the coating starts to wear off. Wish there were a square model available to the American market, but as with everything else we are stuck with what the manufacturer wants to sell us, not necessarly what we want.

Residue free food. (2008-04-06)
No Teflon or Silverstone residue in my food! Cleaning it is easier than my old coated skillets and I don't have to replace it every few months when the finish wears off. I don't understand the purpose of the long handle, though.

Excellent and versatile kitchen appliance (2010-04-24)
This is the second Presto 11-inch electric skillet I have purchased and hope to always have at least one on hand. Learned about it by seeing it used by Costco sample ladies who used it in many ways. Excellent product. Heats rapidly and evenly. Lid fits. Can use for everything from delicate omelettes, grilled Reuben sandwiches, or stir fry.

Question More than A Review (2010-02-25)
I have a question, not a real review.
I just bought the Presto 16" electric skillet which comes with a glass (see-through) cover.
I would actually prefer the smaller Presto 11" electric skillet (mainly to save room and because I cook small meals). But, from the picture of the 11" skillet, it looks like the cover is NOT glass.
Would someone who has purchased the 11" skillet please tell me about the cover - is it glass or metal?

We poach 2 pieces(about 1/2 pound each) Wild Atlantic Salmon in spiced apple cider with cinnamon, slightly salted, allspice, cloves, lemon juice and zest, brown sugar. Setting the control on medium low, cover off, and poach each side five minutes, doing the skin side down first and stripping the skin and dark grey fat off the flesh, after the first turning; finally another five minutes on the stripped side again, which helps rid the fat taste. Check for completion by slitting the thickest area and looking for wet pink or silvery color(not cooked). Turn again, adding another five minutes if not done. Place on dinner plate with thin sliced lemon crossections on top, add a small amount of the liquid for taste. The Presto skillet keeps an even temperature and is easy to clean with its nonstick coating.

How did I get along without this pan? I cook a lot of one-person meals, and this pan is great for that purpose. But, it holds a lot more than I would have guessed from seeing the picture. You can cook main dishes for several people, and side dishes for a larger group because of the depth of the pan. I am a vegetarian, cooking mostly Asian food, and it works for stir-frying, braising, steaming and just about any other method you can think of. The only things I would use my conventional stove for now is boiling big batches of noodles or pasta. This elctric skillet and my rice cooker can handle everything else, and they take up very little counter space. Easy and quick to clean. Most of the time, I can clean it with a damp paper towel and a bit of detergent, don't even need dishwasher:).

My only dislike is that the lid is plastic and maybe could break someday, but otherwise this is the perfect pan!
